<body stylesrc="backtechmywords.htm" background="cogs.jpg" bgcolor="#C0C0C0" text="#000000" link="#0000FF" vlink="#000080" alink="#800080"> <p><strong><font size="4">  About this web-site ~ some notes on the design</font></strong></p> <b> <blockquote> <p>Hyperlinks - definition of my types</p> </b> <p>You'll find that different sorts of hyperlinks behave in different ways.  Some may open up new windows, some will change the existing page, others may invoke a pop-up window.  I've tried for some consistency in my design, so, once you've got the hang of my look and feel, you shouldn't be too surprised as to the behaviour.</p> <p>For example, links in the Footer Bar of my pages with 'frames' (these are further discussed in the section on 'Frames') will change the existing window in preference to opening a new window.  They do this because, once you've got the hang of it, it's very easy to navigate back to the calling page.</p> <p>There are other links that may behave differently, for example, if linking to a page which only has a few words on it, like a comment or a wee aside, I may choose just to open a pop-up window.  The user would simply close this to get back to the main page.  I quite often indicate these links with a <font face="Arial" size="2"><sup>^</sup></font>, for example try this <a href="" onClick="window.open('aboutpop-ups.htm','PopUp','width=520,height=300,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes'); return false;">pop-up-link<font face="Arial" size="2"><sup>^</sup></font></a><sup><font face="Arial" size="2"> </font></sup> - and I'm experimenting with pop-ups which open close themselves, so be prepared for <a href="abouthyperlinks.htm" title="no need to click" onMouseOver="openPopUpN();"> this one<font face="Arial" size="2"><sup><i>N</i></sup></font></a> too (there's no need to click, just hover the mouse) </p> <p>It's worth looking at some more types of link, or rather some more ways of considering them.  For example, there are <b>internal</b> links to other pages in this site and there are <b>external</b> links to pages on other sites.  As well as this, I class internal links as either <b>primary</b> or <b>cross-reference </b>links.  Pop-ups could be considered as either (though somewhat arbitrarily) with the first link instance as primary and any subsequent as cross-reference)</p> <p>As suggested elsewhere, the site has a hierarchical structure, so you could work your way through the pages systematically via all the primary links and visit every one of my pages. </p> <p> Sometimes of course a linked page may in reality relate to more than one subject, and I have put it primarily in one subject and linked it primarily from one page (again, maybe somewhat arbitrarily) but have included perhaps one or more cross-referenced links from other areas and/or other pages. Every page on this site has one and only one primary link to it. There may or may not be other routes to the same page via cross-reference links.<br> <br> So a link could be <b>internal-primary</b>, <b>internal-cross-reference</b>, or, <b>external</b>. I may abbreviate the internal links as, <b>primary</b>, meaning (always) internal primary, and <b> cross-reference</b> meaning, by and large, internal cross-reference.  </p> <p>I say 'by and large' for cross-reference because the way internal cross-reference links and external links behave, particularly in terms of opening new windows, is pretty much the same.  That is, cross-reference and external links will open new windows. Where I have not explicitly described the behaviour of 'external' links, you can assume it to be the same as (and incorporated in the term) 'cross-reference' links. </p> <p>Hyperlinks may be <u>underlined</u> depending on your browser and how you have your Internet Options set up.
