They were after a word that described the the visionary, mystical and healing properties of these substances, and one that did not have a pathological inference (such as with the term psychotomimetic, meaning ‘psychosis mimicking’). Osmond came up with psychedelic as deriving from the Greek <i>psyche</i>, soul, and <i>delos</i>, visible or manifest.
