When I use the word ‘psychedelic’ I mean it as used in the term ‘psychedelic
shamanism’, not as in the term ‘psychedelic sixties’.
Humphry Osmond first proposed the term ‘psychedelic’ in 1956 via
correspondence with Aldous Huxley. They were after a word that described the
the visionary, mystical and healing properties of these substances, and one
that did not have a pathological inference (such as with the term
psychotomimetic, meaning ‘psychosis mimicking’). Osmond came up with
psychedelic as deriving from the Greek psyche, soul, and delos,
visible or manifest. Hence meaning soul or mind manifesting.
