COPY OF MEDIA STORY: Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) has moved the Senate to approve Senate Bill
3247 which makes Salvia divinorum A illegal for purposes of human consumption.
Salvia is a plant which is imported from Mexico and which is used in
landscaping. Of late, it has been promoted as a natural hallucinogen. The
Senate unanimously approved the measure Thursday.
Sen. Burchett stated, “We have enough problems with illegal drugs as it is
without people promoting getting high from some glorified weed that’s been
brought up from Mexico. The only people I’ve heard from who are opposed to
making it illegal are those who are getting stoned on it.”

If this ‘glorified Mexican weed’ quote has been reported accurately
then Senator Tim Burchett’s wholesale dismissal and derogation of each and
everyone who may consider Salvia as something more sublime really amounts to
nothing less than bigotry.
His defamatory characterisation of all Salvia diviorum’s practitioners, -
refusing to acknowledge that anyone could be using it for anything more than
simply "getting stoned on it”, clearly demonstrates his lack of understanding
and respect for those with differing beliefs to his own. With
unconstitutional regard he favours persecution and prosecution, further
perpetuating, under the guise of a “war on drugs”, what has become in effect a
modern-day inquisition.
